SIRIUS Satellite Radio Reports on the Growing Crystal Methamphetamine EpidemicSIRIUS Satellite Radio |
SIRIUS Satellite Radio today announced that SIRIUS OutQ 106 - America's only 24/7 gay and lesbian radio station - will air a special two hour block of programming designed to report on the crystal methamphetamine epidemic and its growing impact on the gay community and to raise awareness on how to address the problem. Seduction: Crystal Meth and The Gay Community will air Friday, October 28 from 4-5 pm ET and then will be followed by an interactive "town hall" style discussion where listeners can speak directly to recovering addicts and drug experts.
Produced and hosted by SIRIUS OutQ News Director, Tim Curran, the special programming shares alarming stories of the seductive nature of crystal meth and the ramifications of its widespread use. Curran covers the close relationship between crystal meth and the HIV virus; how the federal government is responding, and how local communities and individuals can fight this epidemic and help those needing treatment.
Immediately following the one-hour OutQ news special, Curran and SIRIUS OutQ host and Station Manager John McMullen will host a one-hour "town hall" program where several recovering meth addicts will share their personal stories and invite calls from users and potential users to talk about the life-altering power of the drug. Guests during this discussion will also include Jay Dagenhart, recovering meth addict and current head of the Philadelphia Crystal Meth Task Force and Dr. Ken Cimino, adjunct professor at California State-Long Beach and author of the forthcoming book, The Politics of Crystal Meth: Gay Men Share Stories of Addiction and Recovery.
Dr. Perry Halkitis, Professor of Applied Psychology at New York University and author of Meth Use Among Gay Men in New York City comments, "methamphetamine is surely an ever-present element in the lives of some gay men and it is affecting many gay communities throughout the country. SIRIUS Satellite Radio is using its power wisely to educate people. These types of programs can not only help to inform those who are not using about the danger of this drug, but also provide guidance to those who are addicted."
