XM Satellite Radio, the nation's leading provider of satellite radio with approximately 3.8 million subscribers, today announced that it will launch an exclusive, national 24- hour Spanish-language sports channel in partnership with Andres Cantor, the legendary soccer play-by-play announcer and chairman of Futbol de Primera, the leading syndicator of soccer programming in Hispanic radio. The channel, slated to launch in July 2005, will feature in-depth Spanish coverage of the FIFA World Cup Germany 2006, including qualifying matches, beginning later this year (XM will carry English-language coverage of World Cup soccer matches on a separate channel). In addition, the channel will feature coverage of all sports from Latin America and Mexico, including baseball and boxing, along with real-time reporting on sports from all over the world. General Motors will be the presenting sponsor of this new Spanish-language sports channel.
XM has partnered with Andres Cantor, the leading sports commentator for the Telemundo Network and one of the most recognized sports personalities among the Hispanic media. With his unique style, knowledge and energy, Cantor is recognized for his fast-paced, play-by-play soccer coverage and, most notably, his signature call, "Go-o-o-al," which has been enjoyed by sports fans for more than 18 years. In addition, he is a published author and will soon be one of six recipients of the first ever Honorary EMMY En Espanol. Cantor and his company, Futbol de Primera, will create and produce original content for the new 24-hour channel.
"I am pleased to be partnering with XM in the development of this new channel because XM truly understands the importance of providing quality Spanish-language programming," said Andres Cantor. "Now Spanish-speaking people across the country will have access to the best in Spanish-language sports programming, regardless of where they live. What's more, XM will be the only place on satellite radio to hear play-by-play of the FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 Soccer tournament."
There are currently more than 35 million Hispanics living in the United States, according to the most recent U.S. Census Bureau figures. By 2010, the U.S. Hispanic population is projected to increase by 34 percent.
"This new XM channel will deliver unprecedented Spanish-language coverage of the most popular sports in the world to the millions of Spanish speakers living in the U.S. and will further strengthen XM's unmatched Spanish-language lineup ranging from sports to news to the best in Latin music," said Hugh Panero, President and CEO of XM Satellite Radio.
This new channel is the latest addition to XM's expanding line-up of Spanish-language programming, which includes:
- MLB En Espanol (XM Channel 190): Live play-by-play coverage of Major
League Baseball games in Spanish and the XM program "Solamente Pelota,"
